Structure and light
Eveline Gugelmann-Henner grew up in Basel, Switzerland, and graduated from the city’s College of Art and Design. Alongside a career in interior architecture, she developed a way of painting built around the underlying structure of her subjects.
Rigging, petals, piano keys and distant hills become intersecting geometric planes. Colour connects them, allowing forms to overlap with the transparency of stained glass. This visual language carries through her paintings of the coast, gardens, interiors and music.
From Basel to Penobscot Bay
In 1968, Eveline was awarded first prize at an international open-air exhibition in Ascona. Since 1993, her home and studio gallery in Rockport, Maine, have overlooked Penobscot Bay. Its harbours, sails and changing light became central subjects, alongside the Swiss landscapes and vineyards that connect her work to Europe.
In her artist’s statement, she describes painting as “a silent dialogue between structure and light.” The paintings invite that same close attention: to the lines that hold a composition together, and to the colour that sets it in motion.
Chronology
